Louisbourg History

Step back in time to 1744! Experience Louisbourg, a thriving seaport and capital of Ile Royale (Cape Breton Island). The Fortress of Louisbourg was one of the busiest harbours in North America and one of France's key centres of trade and military strength in the New World. Today, the Site is an exciting and entertaining lesson in history. Discover its many secrets! The French came to Louisbourg in 1713, after ceding Acadia and Newfoundland to the British by the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht, which ended the War of the Spanish Succession. France's only remaining possessions in what is now Atlantic Canada were the islands of Cape Breton and Prince Edward, which were then called Isle Royale and Isle Saint-Jean. The French used these islands as a base to continue the lucrative cod fishery of the Grand Banks. In 1719 they began to construct at Louisbourg a fortified town which was only completed on the eve of the first siege in 1745. The town and settlement along the harbour shore soon became a thriving community.
The cod fishery accounted for most of Isle Royale's prosperity. Dried before export, the fish was salted and laid on stages which lined the beaches of Louisbourg and its out ports. Louisbourg became a hub of commerce, trading in manufactures and various materials imported from France, Quebec, the West Indies and New England.
The community of Louisbourg with a population of 1265 is located on the southeast coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. It is easily accessible by road and air. Louisbourg is located beside the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. Besides this interesting historic treasure, beautiful island and magnificent seascapes and beaches also await you in Louisbourg. The Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Cabot Trail are also within easy driving distance, as is the Alexander Graham Bell Museum at Baddeck.

Fortress Louisbourg

By 1744, the year this painstakingly reconstructed fortress immortalizes, the city rivalled New York and Philadelphia. More than 4,000 French citizens lived here, their numbers swelling two-fold during fishing season.
Alas, Louisbourg was doomed, captured by New Englanders in 1745, and the British in 1758. Even inexperienced troops couldn't miss when firing cannons at this colossus. Destroyed and abandoned after the war, it rose again as a national historic site two centuries later.
